(So when they took him [out] and agreed to put him into the bottom of the well…): When they arrived in the desert and reached the well, they took Yusuf (PBUH) and stripped off his shirt; that is, they took it off, then they threw him into the depths of the well. Yusuf started crying out, but they did not respond to him and they took the shirt and left. However, Allah (swt) is fully Aware; He watches over, guards, and protects.
But We inspired to him, “You will surely inform them [someday] about this affair of theirs while they do not perceive [your identity].”…): Allah (swt) revealed to Yusuf (PBUH) what comforted him; meaning, ‘You are safe, O Yusuf, your brothers will one day be forced to knock on your door for help, and you will recognize them but they will not recognize you.’ which was fulfilled forty years later. This was the first of the trials that befell the young child Yusuf (PBUH); the trial of the well.
