(36) - (Indeed, those who disbelieve spend their wealth to avert [people] from the way of Allah. So they will spend it; then it will be for them a [source of] regret; then they will be overcome. And those who have disbelieved - unto Hell they will be gathered.)

The Quranic verses still address the polytheists of Mecca and narrate the events of the Battle of Badr. As mentioned previously, the Quranic verses have specific reasons at the time of its revelation, and at the same time, it conveys general meanings.

( إِنَّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا يُنفِقُونَ أَمْوَالَهُمْ لِيَصُدُّوا عَن سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ) (and struck terror into them): The polytheists supported their followers against the Messenger of Allah (saws) by providing resources, and equipping them to obstruct the path of Allah (swt). This act of standing against the Prophet (saws) is a hindrance against the way of Allah (swt), for the path of Allah (swt) is the path of truth, the straight path, and it is the path of the Prophet (saws).

( فَسَيُنفِقُونَهَا ) (So they will spend it): This is a statement about the future. It is true that the disbelievers of the Quraysh spent their wealth to resist and oppose the call of the Prophet (saws), however, in the future, and at all times, there will be enemies who gather to stand against the truth through their wealth and possessions.

( ثُمَّ تَكُونُ عَلَيْهِمْ حَسْرَةً ) (then it will be for them a [source of] regret): Allah (swt) informs us about the outcome, indicating that their efforts will not be fruitful. This is a revelation from Allah (swt) about the Battle of Badr and a general message for the believers. It conveys that those who obstruct the path of truth and goodness, no matter how much wealth they spend to hinder it, will eventually regret it, as they will be defeated and held accountable for these acts by Allah (swt).

( وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا إِلَىٰ جَهَنَّمَ يُحْشَرُونَ ) (And those who have disbelieved – unto Hell they will be gathered): The consequence in this world will be their regret over their wealth because they couldn’t achieve their goals of supporting falsehood and opposing the truth. Furthermore, in the Hereafter, they will be gathered into Hellfire.
