The task of the Angels is to strengthen the hearts of believers because the number of the enemy was large, and it was the first armed confrontation between the Messenger of Allah (saws) and the polytheists.
( سَأُلْقِي فِي قُلُوبِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا الرُّعْبَ ) (I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieved): Allah (swt) is the One Who will cast fear in the hearts of the polytheists. Even though the polytheists might be initially reassured because of the Muslims’ small number and limited resources, but Allah (swt) guaranteed that He (swt) will cast fear in their hearts from this small group of believers.
( فَاضْرِبُوا فَوْقَ الْأَعْنَاقِ وَاضْرِبُوا مِنْهُمْ كُلَّ بَنَانٍ ) (so strike [them] upon the necks and strike from them every fingertip): Indeed, the description pertains to the weapons of that time, such as swords and spears. We should not distort the verses or manipulate words to serve our desires, as this could lead to misrepresenting the essence of Islam.
