(11) - ([Remember] when He overwhelmed you with drowsiness [giving] security from Him and sent down upon you from the sky, rain by which to purify you and remove from you the evil [suggestions] of Satan and to make steadfast your hearts and plant firmly thereby your feet.)

Drowsiness is the initial state before sleep, characterized by a gentle lull in the nerves. This drowsiness provides a sense of security, tranquility, and calmness in the nerves of believers. In fact, the act of sleeping in itself is one of Allah’s (swt) signs:

 وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ مَنَامُكُم بِاللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ وَابْتِغَاؤُكُم مِّن فَضْلِهِ ۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَاتٍ لِّقَوْمٍ يَسْمَعُونَ

(And of His signs is your sleep by night and day and your seeking of His bounty. Indeed in that are signs for a people who listen.) (Ar-Room: 23)

Sleeping during the night is common, but Allah (swt) has provided a reserve for those unable to sleep at night, allowing them to rest during the day. Scientists conducted experiments on sleep; they tied a person to a crane from the middle with balance. When this person fell asleep, he lost balance as if some weight had been placed on one side. Thus, specific reactions occur, leading to the heaviness in the body and feet before sleep. Sleep is indeed a sign among the signs of Allah (swt), and He (swt) has bestowed a sense of security and tranquility on believers through this drowsiness, leading them to feel comfort.

( وَيُنَزِّلُ عَلَيْكُم مِّنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً لِّيُطَهِّرَكُم بِهِ) (and sent down upon you from the sky, rain by which to purify you): Allah (swt) sent down water from the sky to purify the believers through ablution, as ablution was a major concern of theirs at that time. Meanwhile, the polytheists occupied the water sources, focusing on water for drinking purposes.

( وَيُذْهِبَ عَنكُمْ رِجْزَ الشَّيْطَانِ ) (and remove from you the evil [suggestions] of Satan): It means Satan’s whispers, or some of the ideas that come from him.

( وَلِيَرْبِطَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِكُمْ ) (and to make steadfast your hearts): The hearts of the believers found solace because they had dug into the sand, preserving water for both drinking and ablution.

( وَيُثَبِّتَ بِهِ الْأَقْدَامَ ) (and plant firmly thereby your feet): In one sense, making feet firm represents a spiritual matter, and in another sense, it refers to the fact that rainfall made the land firm and prevented dust from flying up.
