الآية رقم (21) - أُوْلَـئِكَ الَّذِينَ خَسِرُواْ أَنفُسَهُمْ وَضَلَّ عَنْهُم مَّا كَانُواْ يَفْتَرُونَ

(21) - Those are the ones who will have lost themselves, and lost from them is what they used to invent

(أُولَٰئِكَ الَّذِينَ خَسِرُوا أَنفُسَهُمْ… ) (Those are the ones who will have lost themselves): They lost themselves; because they wronged their souls by indulged themselves in immediate and short pleasures, so they deserve eternal and long suffering.

(…وَضَلَّ عَنْهُم… ) (and lost from them): None of the deities they worshiped other than Allah (swt) will come to aid them. If the idols, which they worshipped, were to have any power on the Day of Judgement, they would have rushed to save them from the punishment. But they completely have no power nor strength. For the disbelievers, Allah (swt) decreed:

 … وَمَا لَهُمْ فِي الْأَرْضِ مِن وَلِيٍّ وَلَا نَصِيرٍ…

(And there will not be for them on earth any protector or helper) (at-tawba:74)

(… مَّا كَانُوا يَفْتَرُونَ ) (is what they used to invent): indicates what they were calling falsely.
