الآية رقم (11) - فَوَقَاهُمُ اللَّهُ شَرَّ ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمِ وَلَقَّاهُمْ نَضْرَةً وَسُرُورًا

(11) - So God will protect them from the woes of that Day, and will grant them radiance and joy.

Hence, Allah (swt) will save the believers from that frowning and grim Day of which they fear., He (swt) also will protect them from its hardships and woes. Pondering on the verse, we notice that the word “Day” is mentioned in singular form, so if it is just one day, then how long is this Day? In another verse, Allah (swt) says:

 تَعْرُجُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ وَالرُّوحُ إِلَيْهِ فِي يَوْمٍ كَانَ مِقْدَارُهُ خَمْسِينَ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ

(The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years.) (Al-Maarij: 4)

Allah (swt) is the Creator of time, thus, He 9swt) can create a day whose length is just one hour, or a day of twenty-four hours as our worldly days. Allah (swt) can also create a day whose extend is fifty thousand years or even a million years, as these all according to Allah’s will. So times may vary and differs from planet to another. This fact is clear in Allah’s sayings:

 يُدَبِّرُ الْأَمْرَ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ إِلَى الْأَرْضِ ثُمَّ يَعْرُجُ إِلَيْهِ فِي يَوْمٍ كَانَ مِقْدَارُهُ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ مِّمَّا تَعُدُّونَ

(He arranges [each] matter from the heaven to the earth; then it will ascend to Him in a Day, the extent of which is a thousand years of those which you count.) (As-Sajda: 5)

 تَعْرُجُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ وَالرُّوحُ إِلَيْهِ فِي يَوْمٍ كَانَ مِقْدَارُهُ خَمْسِينَ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ

(The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years.) (Al-Ma’arij: 4)

Thus, the Day in the Hereafter have different measures from the day of the worldly life. So, the Day of Judgement is a very long and difficult Day. Allah (swt) will save the believers from its hardships and:

(  وَلَقَّاهُمْ نَضْرَةً وَسُرُورًا ) (…and will grant them radiance and joy): Granting requires meeting and inspection. This Arabic word is also used metaphorically to mean receiving good or evil. So, the servants of Allah (swt) will be given radiance in their faces and joy in their hearts. On the other hand, the disbelievers will be given frowning in their faces and grief in their hearts. As Allah (swt) mentions:

 وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ نَّاضِرَةٌ

([Some] faces, that Day, will be radiant,) (Al-Qiyamah: 22)

 وَوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ بَاسِرَةٌ

(And [some] faces, that Day, will be contorted) (Al-Qiyamah: 23)

Joy means satisfaction in the heart, when the faculties are satisfied and the soul is peaceful. In fact, the person’s feelings are reflected on his face. If he is sad, sadness appears on his face, and if he is happy, gladness appears on his face. Thus, faces reflect all the reactions of the souls, be happiness, gladness and joy or sadness and anger.
