الآية رقم (3) - أَنِ اعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ وَاتَّقُوهُ وَأَطِيعُونِ

(3) - [Saying], 'Worship Allah, fear Him and obey me.

The Prophet Noah’s Message comprised three issues: Worshipping Allah (swt), piety and obeying His commands.

( أَنِ اعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ) (‘Worship Allah, ): Worship Allah (swt) signifies obeying Him (swt) by performing what He commands and refraining from what He (swt) prohibits.

(وَاتَّقُوهُ ) (…fear Him ): To worship Allah (swt) and fear Him, this is the meaning of piety. Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah honour his face) defined the piety said:

‘Fearing The Magnificent, carrying out (the commands found in) the revelation, being contented with a little, and preparation for the day of departure)’

This entitles worshipping Allah (swt) alone, fearing Him, avoiding His punishment and recompense and taking faith as a protection and salvation from His chastisement.

(  وَأَطِيعُونِ ) (…and obey me): The Prophet Noah (PBUH) did not say ‘and obey him’ as their obedience to him is obedience to Allah (swt). So that he (PBUH) “obey me” as he warned them against Allah’s punishment and wished them all the good. Hence, they had to obey him to avoid the punishment befallen upon them. All the Prophets addressed their people with the same speech: Hud (PBUH) said to his people:

 إِنِّي لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌ (125) فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ

(Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. (125) So fear Allah and obey me.) (Ash-Shu’ara: 125-126)

The Prophet Salih (PBUH), as well as, the Prophets Lut (PBUH) and Shu’aib (PBUH) said the same to their people.
