الآية رقم (12) - مَنَّاعٍ لِّلْخَيْرِ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ

(12) - A preventer of good, transgressing and sinful

The chiefs of Quraysh used to prevent the people from doing good deeds and having good faith in Allah (swt). Hence, the preventer of good is stingy in giving away money or charity. Al-Walid ibn al-Mughira, who was a rich man and had ten sons, he used to tell them: “Whoever accepts Islam among you, I shall deprive him of my bounty.” That is why Allah (swt) says:

 أَن كَانَ ذَا مَالٍ وَبَنِينَ

(Because he is a possessor of wealth and children,) (Al-Qalam: 14)

He refused to give any good to others and even to himself, that is why he stood against the Call of Faith and withheld his money from the needy.

(مُعْتَدٍ ) (…transgressing ): Not only he attained that which Allah (swt) has made permissible for him, but he exceeded the legislated bounds., by theft, bribe, by force and by deception. He is a transgressor in all its forms.

 (  أَثِيمٍ ) (…sinful): This Arabic word is an exaggeration form. He is not just a sinner, rather a sinful because of his misdeeds and transgression insistently, without being reproached by any admonition. In another verse, Allah (swt) says:

          مَّنَّاعٍ لِّلْخَيْرِ مُعْتَدٍ مُّرِيبٍ

(Preventer of good, aggressor, and doubter,) (Qaf: 25)

He is a doubter because he doubts the Day of Judgement. If he believed in the last Day and the Recompense, he would not have prevented the good from people or from himself, nor would he have resisted faith and giving Allah’s rights. The doubter is sinful, fears to be exposed, as the proverb says: (A doubter is about to say: Take me).
