(1) - Blessed is He in whose hand is dominion, and He is over all things competent-

The dominion is for Allah (swt) only and He is The Powerful over everything. We were null, then Allah (swt) created us in a universe that He (swt) had created and prepared in advanced.

Surah Tabarak presents to us a broad and comprehensive vision that transcends the narrow world of the earth and the limited space of the world to worlds in the heavens that are not affected by defects, from which man understands the nature of his existence in this universe that is controlled by the command of Allah (swt) alone. So that he becomes in harmony with the great system of the universe that praises Allah (swt).

(… تَبَارَكَ الَّذِي بِيَدِهِ الْمُلْكُ) (Blessed is He in whose hand is dominion,): If we carefully examine the word ‘tabarak’ in the Holy Quran, you will find that the letter ‘alif’ is clearly written after the letter ‘bee’ in some cases, while in other cases the letter ‘bee’ comes without the letter ‘alif’ after it. This indicates that the matter is not a result of the words being written haphazardly. If it has been haphazardly, it would have come all in one manner. Just as the words and structure of the Holy Quran is miraculous, Allah (swt) willed its writing to be a miracle as well.

Some have said that the Arabs in the time of the Prophet (saws) did not master writing. We answer: If they were not familiar with the writing rules, they would not write the word ‘bism’ (in the name of) without a letter ‘alif’ in its place, whereas it was written with the ‘alif’ in another position. They knew that the Holy Quran should be written exactly as it was revealed by the Angel Jibril, as divinely ordained.

(… تَبَارَكَ ) (Blessed is ): The word derived from it is ‘baraka’ which refers to blessings, meaning to gain more than you expect from something, as such when food for three persons suffices ten, you say that this food is blessed.

Among the meanings of (Tabarak): Allah is The Almighty, no one is equivalent to Him and His bestowments are abundant. These three attributes are complementary to each other.

Interestingly, this word ‘tabarak’ is miraculous in its writing and its form, noticing that this word is mentioned nine times in the Holy Quran, seven of them were written with the letter ‘alif’ , and two times without it. This illustrate what was mentioned that the Holy Quran is written as Allah (swt) willed.

To conclude, the Holy Quran is not an ordinary book neither in its writing nor in its recitation. You can read any book in any situation but when you want to deal with the Holy Quran you have to be purified physically and prepared to listen and read Allah’s words. Hence, the word ‘tabarak’ carry the three meanings that are: Allah is Almighty, no one is equivalent to Him, no parallel to Him in any of His attributes or His actions and that His bestowments are great. This in in our interest; when no God that is Almighty, or Great or Self-Sufficient but Him (swt).

) (…in whose hand ): When we read the word (hand) we must know that Allah (swt) is the best Who knows about Himself, so that we shall not go further than that.Yes, He (swt) has hands but beware of thinking that anything relates to Him (swt) is similar to Humans.

Some say that ‘Allah has hands but they are not as ours’ because we understand every attribute about Him (swt) in the light of the verse:

لَيْسَ كَمِثْلِهِ شَيْءٌ ۖ

(There is nothing like unto Him,) (Ash-Shura: 11)

Accordingly, the interpretation of Allah’s attribute is possible. Allah (swt) says:

(Rather, both His hands are extended; He spends however He wills.) (Al-Maida: 64)

However, when Allah (swt) says:

يَدُ اللَّهِ فَوْقَ أَيْدِيهِمْ

(The hand of Allah is over their hands.) (Al-Fath: 285)

Meaning that His Power (swt) is over theirs. Just as when He (swt) talks about His ability of creation:

وَالسَّمَاءَ بَنَيْنَاهَا بِأَيْدٍ وَإِنَّا لَمُوسِعُونَ

(And the heaven We constructed with strength, and indeed, We are [its] expander.) (Adh-Dhariyat: 47)

Thus, as the dominion is under Allah’s control, you should not worry about your provision since that Allah (swt) has created you, so He (swt) guarantee to provide you with provision coming out of the earth and from down the heaven.

Since that the provision depends on all the natural phenomenon on earth such as the wind, the air, the heat from the sun, the rains from the clouds. Certainly, these all are in the dominion of Allah (swt), he One, so you should not worry about your provision.

) (…in whose hand is dominion ): Logically, the dominion requires a dominant, a dominated and a power to keep this dominion. As if Allah (swt) wants to tell us that He (swt) is The Powerful and to Him is The Absolute Power, whereas the human being does not have the full ability of dominating nor the power to preserve what he/she dominates.

There is a difference between (ownership) and (dominion). The first one indicates that a person may owns something such as, clothes, books and … but to have control over the owner of these things, this is what we call (the dominion). When this dominion is apparent to us we call it (the world of dominion), but if this dominion is hidden to us we call it (the world of realm). So we have three words: ownership, dominion and realm. Ownership is used with a person who has full control over something so he becomes owner and when he has control over some people then he becomes a king. This is in concern of human beings, as for Allah (swt), He is The Owner of all the owners and what they own. Hence, everything is subjected to Allah’s will:

قُلِ اللَّهُمَّ مَالِكَ الْمُلْكِ تُؤْتِي الْمُلْكَ مَن تَشَاءُ وَتَنزِعُ الْمُلْكَ مِمَّن تَشَاءُ وَتُعِزُّ مَن تَشَاءُ وَتُذِلُّ مَن تَشَاءُ ۖ بِيَدِكَ الْخَيْرُ ۖ إِنَّكَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

(Say, “O Allah, Owner of Sovereignty, You give sovereignty to whom You will and You take sovereignty away from whom You will. You honor whom You will and You humble whom You will. In Your hand is [all] good. Indeed, You are over all things competent.) (Ali-Imran: 26)

Thereof, the worldly ownership is not permanent, as Allah (swt) gives sovereignty to whom He wills and takes sovereignty away from whom He wills. It is Allah’s (swt) will that can never be stopped. Thus, Allah (swt) with His indefinite Supreme Power has created life and death in addition to the sky and all the planets within it. Allah (swt) as well, has created the earth and subjected the mountains and rivers for man’s sake and in turn commanded him to strive in it to seek the provision. So, Allah (swt) is Powerful and Competent, He has created the human being and gives him/her ability to build on earth and pave ways in earth and mountains, all such due to Allah’s power not the ma’s self-ability.

(… وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ) (and He is over all things competent –): Allah (swt) has the Absolute Power in His Kingdom. So when He (swt) wills a matter, it will definitely happen. And there is not any absolute power or capability but His (swt). Nothing can go against His will, He (swt) is over all thins competent. To conclude, Allah (swt) has the dominion of heaven and earth, He is the Highest, the Powerful, The Capable of bringing to existence, giving provision, and causing death. He (swt) decrees the destiny at the end; to Paradise or to Hell.
