They wanted to be with those who were left behind. They accepted for themselves to be subjected to the same rules applied to women, to stay with those were left behind in al-Medina. Indeed, they do not understand, because they willingly adorn themselves with characteristics that is not suitable for men. They rejoiced in this without realizing the humiliation it entailed for them.

(وَطُبِعَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ) (And their hearts were sealed over.): The hypocrite’s words proclaim faith, while his heart is filled with disbelief. In this state, his faculties conflict, and Allah (swt) seals his heart.

(فَهُمْ لَا يَفْقَهُونَ) (So they do not understand.): They do not comprehend the rewards and blessings they were deprived of by not joining the Messenger of Allah (saws).
