( وَنَادَىٰ أَصْحَابُ الْأَعْرَافِ رِجَالًا يَعْرِفُونَهُم بِسِيمَاهُمْ ) (And the companions of the Elevations will call to men [within Hell] whom they recognize by their mark) : Allah (swt) tells us how the people on the heights will reprimand prominent leaders of the polytheists of whom they recognize by their marks, such as Abu Jahl, Abu Lahab, and others who were alive at the time of the Prophet (saws).

( قَالُوا مَا أَغْنَىٰ عَنكُمْ جَمْعُكُمْ) ( saying, “Of no avail to you was your gathering): They will tell them that their large numbers will not benefit them.

( وَمَا كُنتُمْ تَسْتَكْبِرُونَ) (and [the fact] that you were arrogant): They will benefit nothing from their false pride as well.
