(58) - (And the good land - its vegetation emerges by permission of its Lord; but that which is bad - nothing emerges except sparsely, with difficulty. Thus do We diversify the signs for a people who are grateful.)

( وَالْبَلَدُ الطَّيِّبُ) (And the good land): The fertile soil which is ready for rainfall.

( يَخْرُجُ نَبَاتُهُ بِإِذْنِ رَبِّهِ ) (its vegetation emerges by permission of its Lord): Allah (swt) allows the vegetation in the good land to emerge with ease and facilitation.

( وَالَّذِي خَبُثَ لَا يَخْرُجُ إِلَّا نَكِدًا) (but that which is bad – nothing emerges except sparsely, with difficulty): It is difficult for vegetation to grow in a bad land.

( كَذَٰلِكَ نُصَرِّفُ الْآيَاتِ) (Thus do We diversify the signs): Allah (swt) gives us different signs and clarifies them for us.

An example is given of a good soil that is ready to receive the rain and then the vegetation emerges with Allah’s permission. On the contrary, the vegetation of spoiled soil is very difficult to emerge no matter how much rain falls upon it. The same goes for a good person who accepts faith, the Directional Guidance comes to him and then he receives the Guidance of Support.

( لِقَوْمٍ يَشْكُرُونَ ) (for a people who are grateful): People who are grateful when they see the blessings. Thanking for the blessings make them last, as Allah (swt) says in:

 لَئِن شَكَرْتُمْ لَأَزِيدَنَّكُمْ

(‘If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]) (Ibrahim: 7)

Being grateful is a sign of a faithful person.
