(47) - (And when their eyes are turned toward the companions of the Fire, they say, "Our Lord, do not place us with the wrongdoing people.")

( وَإِذَا صُرِفَتْ أَبْصَارُهُمْ تِلْقَاءَ أَصْحَابِ النَّارِ ) (And when their eyes are turned toward the companions of the Fire): The Quranic precision is clearly evident here. When describing the speech between the people on the heights and those in Paradise, it says: (And they call out to the companions of Paradise, “Peace be upon you.”): As if to say that the people on the heights turned towards the people of Paradise deliberately and greeted them. But upon mentioning those residing in Hell it says: (And when their eyes are turned toward the companions of the Fire). They never wanted to turn to the side of those who are in Hell, their eyes were rather turned to that side by force. The Arabic text of the verse uses the passive form for: (are turned) as if to say that their sight was unwillingly turned towards Hell’s side.

( قَالُوا رَبَّنَا لَا تَجْعَلْنَا مَعَ الْقَوْمِ الظَّالِمِينَ ) ( they say, “Our Lord, do not place us with the wrongdoing people.”): They are left standing on the heights. Upon seeing the torment that the dwellers in Hell are suffering from, they begged Allah (swt) not to place them with the wrongdoers.
