( هَلْ يَنظُرُونَ إِلَّا تَأْوِيلَهُ) (Do they await except its result?): The result is that to which a thing returns, or what it ends up as. On the Day of Judgment, they should expect no other than the result of their deeds, which is to enter either Paradise or Hell. When people are being judged and each person takes his book in his hand, that is the moment when everyone will receive the result or outcome of his deeds; so that he will either go to Paradise or to Hell. He will see his outcome and the fair result.

( يَوْمَ يَأْتِي تَأْوِيلُهُ) (The Day its result comes): When a person knows the final result of either being from the people of Paradise or those of Hell.

( يَقُولُ الَّذِينَ نَسُوهُ مِن قَبْلُ) (those who had ignored it before will say): The people who ignored it and did not work for it.

( قَدْ جَاءَتْ رُسُلُ رَبِّنَا بِالْحَقِّ فَهَل لَّنَا مِن شُفَعَاءَ) (“The messengers of our Lord had come with the truth, so are there [now] any intercessors): On that Day, they will look for someone to intercede on their behalf.

( فَيَشْفَعُوا لَنَا) (to intercede for us): To get them into Paradise.

( أَوْ نُرَدُّ فَنَعْمَلَ غَيْرَ الَّذِي كُنَّا نَعْمَلُ ) (or could we be sent back to do other than we used to do?): They want to be sent back so that they would act differently than what they did during their worldly life. The answer for that will be:

( قَدْ خَسِرُوا أَنفُسَهُمْ ) (They will have lost themselves): They neither found guidance, nor a single intercessor to make a plea for them, they also cannot return to the worldly life to act differently than the first time.

( وَضَلَّ عَنْهُم مَّا كَانُوا يَفْتَرُونَ ) (and lost from them is what they used to invent): All what they falsely did in the worldly life from worshiping their desires, their idols and statues, and their goals in life, has gone far away from them so that they cannot even find a single intercessor to plead for them so that to change their destiny from going to Hell into entering the Paradise .
