الآية رقم (71) - قَالَ قَدْ وَقَعَ عَلَيْكُم مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ رِجْسٌ وَغَضَبٌ أَتُجَادِلُونَنِي فِي أَسْمَاء سَمَّيْتُمُوهَا أَنتُمْ وَآبَآؤكُم مَّا نَزَّلَ اللّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلْطَانٍ فَانتَظِرُواْ إِنِّي مَعَكُم مِّنَ الْمُنتَظِرِينَ

(71) - ([Hud] said, "Already have defilement and anger fallen upon you from your Lord. Do you dispute with me concerning [mere] names you have named them, you and your fathers, for which Allah has not sent down any authority? Then wait; indeed, I am with you among those who wait.".)

( قَالَ قَدْ وَقَعَ عَلَيْكُم مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ رِجْسٌ وَغَضَبٌ ) (([Hud] said, “Already have defilement and anger fallen upon you from your Lord): The Prophet Hud (PBUH) used the past tense even though the action had not yet happened. This means that the Divin Punishment would inevitably afflict them, as this is this Allah’s promise. Similar to the verse:

 أَتَىٰ أَمْرُ اللَّهِ فَلَا تَسْتَعْجِلُوهُ

(The command of Allah had come, so be not impatient for it) (An-Nahl: 1)

In the text of the verse (had come) is said in the past tense. After that it says: (so be not impatient for it) because when a promise is made by Allah (swt), the promise is certainly will be fulfilled.

( رِجْسٌ) (defilement): This word indicates filth.

( وَغَضَبٌ) (and anger): Allah’s (swt) Anger has fallen upon the people of Prophet Hud (PBUH).

( أَتُجَادِلُونَنِي فِي أَسْمَاءٍ ) (Do you dispute with me concerning [mere] names): They argue and disputed about names that they and their forefathers assigned to their false gods.

( مَّا نَزَّلَ اللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلْطَانٍ ) (for which Allah has not sent down any authority): What they have worshipped were only names for which Allah (swt) gave no sanction.

( فَانتَظِرُوا إِنِّي مَعَكُم مِّنَ الْمُنتَظِرِينَ ) (Then wait; indeed, I am with you among those who wait): They will find the punishment they were promised.
