( قَالَ فَبِمَا أَغْوَيْتَنِي) ([Satan] said, “Because You have put me in error): Allah (swt) definitely does not tempt people to sin. The reason why damned Satan said these words is because he wanted to shift the blame of his disobedience onto Allah (swt) because of the fact that Allah (swt) gave him the freedom to choose between obedience and disobedience. The same excuse is used by a person who steals, lies, or commits crimes and then says that Allah (swt) has tempted him to error, and that he would not have been misguided if it was not the Will of Allah (swt). But the fact of the matter is that Allah (swt) gave us the free will to choose. Furthermore, we should not forget that Allah (swt) has a Legislative Will and a Universal Will. We are bound by the Universal Will, but as for the Legislative Will, it is left for us to abide by or not. For example, we cannot say that Allah (swt) misguided us because He (swt) gave us the ability to not fast. This is absolutely wrong because Allah’s (swt) Legislative Will is that we do fast, at the same time, we have the freedom to choose of going either way, but we will be held accountable for the choice we make. Satan used the sentence (“Because You have put me in error)”: to indicate his ability to choose temptation because of the free will Allah (swt) gave to him.

( لَأَقْعُدَنَّ لَهُمْ صِرَاطَكَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ) (“I will surely sit in wait for them on Your straight path”): Satan choose to tempt those who are on the straight path. As for others who are tempted by their own choices, Satan is not concerned with them.
