(… وَطَعَامًا ذَا غُصَّةٍ) (And food that chokes…): This food is not tasty, bitter and not easy to swallow because it fills with thrones that stick to the throat. Its eater can neither swallow it nor spit it out. Allah (swt) mentions three kinds of the food of the dwellers of hell: Az-Zaqqum, Ad-Dari’ and Ghislin. Az-Zaqqum is a tree which springs out of the bottom of hell, Allah (swt) states its nature in the following verses:

 أَذَٰلِكَ خَيْرٌ نُّزُلًا أَمْ شَجَرَةُ الزَّقُّومِ(62) إِنَّا جَعَلْنَاهَا فِتْنَةً لِّلظَّالِمِينَ(63) إِنَّهَا شَجَرَةٌ تَخْرُجُ فِي أَصْلِ الْجَحِيمِ (64) طَلْعُهَا  كَأَنَّهُ رُءُوسُ الشَّيَاطِينِ

(Is Paradise a better accommodation or the tree of zaqqum? (62) Indeed, We have made it a torment for the wrongdoers (63) Indeed, it is a tree issuing from the bottom of the Hellfire (64) Its emerging fruit as if it was heads of the devils) (As-Safat: 62-65)

إِنَّ شَجَرَتَ الزَّقُّومِ(43) طَعَامُ الْأَثِيمِ (44) كَالْمُهْلِ يَغْلِي فِي الْبُطُونِ (45) كَغَلْيِ الْحَمِيمِ 

(Indeed, the tree of Zaqqum (43) Is food for the sinful (44) Like murky oil, it boils within bellies (45) Like the boiling of scalding water) (Ad-Dukhan: 43-46)

As for Ad-Dari’, it is like a thorny plant. Allah (swt) says:

 لَّيْسَ لَهُمْ طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِن ضَرِيعٍ (6) لَّا يُسْمِنُ وَلَا يُغْنِي مِن جُوعٍ (7)

(For them there will be no food except from a poisonous, thorny plant (6) Which neither nourishes nor avails against hunger) (Al-Ghashia: 6-7)

Regarding the Ghislin, it is the puss that comes out of the dwellers of hell. It looks as if it is the wash liquid of their wounds. Allah (swt) says:

 فَلَيْسَ لَهُ الْيَوْمَ هَاهُنَا حَمِيمٌ(35) وَلَا طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِنْ غِسْلِينٍ

(So there is not for him here this Day any devoted friend (35) Nor any food except from the discharge of wounds) (Al-Haqqa: 35-36)

(  وَعَذَابًا أَلِيمًا… ) (…and a painful punishment): Allah (swt) prepared for them chains, burning fire and food that makes them choke, moreover, painful punishment in the hell fire.
